The Museum
The Museum is located in Puente de Sabiñánigo (Huesca), in the central Pyrenees (Spain). It is housed in a splendid rural architectural gem going back to the 1800’s. It opened in 1979 and is the happy combination of the vision, labor and creativity of sculptor Angel Orensanz, the Amigos del Serrablo Association (Friends of the Serrablo); and the City Council of Sabiñánigo. Angel Orensanz had observed for years the amazing architectural features of this old homestead and fell in love with the building. He purchased it and made an agreement with Amigos del Serrablo, a local cultural and ethnological preservation association. They had a recognized track record in saving the unique heritage and cultural identity of this part of Northern Aragon. The city council of Sabiñánigo has provided since then the financial and legal framework of the permanent development of the Museum. Ten years ago, the Museum underwent a significant expansion with spaces for special collections and for class room and educational activities.
The museum convenes biannually The Angel Orensanz International Award; and the awarded pieces are made part of the municipal holdings, and placed strategically throughout the city. The museum is the venue of numerous seminars, courses, workshops and publications on popular culture, Aragonese language, history, architectural and environmental preservation and traditional music. The work of Angel Orensanz occupies the higher floors of the building.
The award, the publications, the research, the collections and the publications are part of the intense life of this institution visited by thousands of people every year. Please note the new telephone number for the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York (as of April 2015): 212.253.0452
